Repeat after me:

I am happy… I am happy…

Not feeling better yet? Keep going.

I am happy… I am happy… I am happy…

Good job, you’re getting there. Okay, so maybe you think I’m crazy, but stick with me for a minute. You see, happiness isn’t floating about in the universe somewhere, waiting for you to stumble upon it. If you’re telling yourself that happiness is just around the corner, you’re never going to find it. It’s not waiting for you to buy a house, meet the perfect man/woman, get that promotion, or retire. Those things are temporary – they’ll NEVER make you happy in the long term.

Unless…

Unless you make a choice to wake up every day and choose to repeat the mantra to yourself, I am happy… I am happy…, because happiness is a choice.

Don’t believe me? Try this:

I want you to smile, ear-to-ear, as wide as you can. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, fake it. Now, keep smiling, nice and big, as you read the rest of this post.

Happiness doesn’t come from the outside – no person, no achievement, no object can make you happy. Happiness has to come from the inside. You choose whether you’re going to enjoy the sunshine or complain about the heat. You choose whether you’re going to work at a job you hate or take a risk to find a job doing something that you love. You choose whether to stew all day about the “idiot driver” who cut you off in traffic, or just LET IT GO.

We like to blame our bad mood on things that happen around us, and sometimes the things that happen around us really suck. HOWEVER, the choice is yours – will you let what you can’t control ruin the rest of your day, or will you focus on the good stuff?

It’s your choice. Allow yourself to enjoy life. Stop regretting the past; you can’t change it. Stop worrying about the future; prepare for it, and meet it head on. The power to be happy is in your hands, so use it.

Are you still smiling? According to scientific research, the very act of smiling can lift your mood. Are you still forcing yourself to smile, or do you feel a little better than you did 30 seconds ago? Now apply that same idea to your everyday life.

Remember the mantra: I am happy, I am happy, I am happy… because I choose to be.
